Ministry of Water Resources Issues Water Conservation Alert Amidst Hot and Dry Season

Phnom Penh: Cambodia braces for an unusually hot and dry season, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology issued a stark warning on March 2, 2024, urging citizens to conserve water. This year's dry season is characterized by higher temperatures and reduced rainfall compared to 2023, accompanied by frequent thunderstorms and unstable air conditions.

Officials from the Ministry have forecasted that the early months of the 2024 rainy season will witness temperatures that are equal to or exceed long-term averages, with rainfall expected to be scarce and sporadic. This period is also likely to see an increase in thunder, lightning, and strong winds.

A significant factor in this year's weather pattern is the El Niño phenomenon, which the Ministry estimates will affect over 70% of the Pacific Ocean from March to April 2024. However, predictions indicate a decrease in El Niño's intensity by May 2024, with expectations of a shift towards ENSO-Neutral conditions.

In light of these forecasts, the Ministry is calling upon the public to practice water conservation, particularly in rural areas where water sources are less accessible. Citizens are also advised to stay vigilant during periods of extreme heat and dryness, as well as during episodes of thunder, lightning, and strong winds expected in April and May 2024.

The Ministry's alert underscores the importance of preparedness and responsible water usage as the nation navigates through these challenging climatic conditions.
